Based on the book: Promised Land by Barack Obama. Lyrics: [Ambient Intro] [Theme] Along the West Colonnade, the morning gathers slowly, winter wind, summer heat, white columns holding time. Ed wipes the earth from hands like weathered roots, the roses flare against the burden of the office. Malia and Sasha cross the garden like bright comets, Bo and Sunny disappear into the snow. At night, beneath the flag, the footsteps soften, the monument cuts its needle through the dark. “The jury’s still out.” Still the long path asks its question: can a country meet the promise of its creed, can a solitary heart belong to something larger? [Verse] Iowa doors opened onto doubt and possibility, a name, a face unlike the forty-two before. Some feared the fall before the climb began, some called protection what was born of disappointment. Between the pulpit and the courthouse, between old wounds and a new majority, a bridge was built from language broad enough for all: a school for every child, a doctor for every family, justice not as favor, but the common air. “The point was to win.” Not for the portrait, not the motorcade, but to bend the real toward the ideal, to prove despair was not the only inheritance. [Interlude] [Verse] Then markets fell like glass in winter, homes went dark, the factory gates were chained. A trillion whispered terror through the room, while snow erased the edges of Chicago. A pen gave Lilly one small step toward equal pay; another stroke forbade the sanctioned cruelty. But every rescue carried compromise, every distant screen returned the weight of command. Three shots crossed the Somali darkness; years later, ghostly figures entered Abbottabad. “We got him,” spoken softly, no raised fist— and afterward the harder question rose: why can a nation summon all its strength to kill, yet not to shelter, teach, or heal? [Build] [Crescendo] Match the reality to the ideal, through the garden, through the fire. “The jury’s still out,” but we are here, hands on the stone, faces lifted higher. Something larger than ourselves— not promised once, but made together. [Crescendo] [Release] The colonnade returns beneath the evening rain, the briefcase heavy, the roses breathing. “I’m not yet ready to abandon the possibility of America.” So let the next generation take the road, and make the promise living— not for a privileged few, but everybody, everybody.
