Experience the sights and ambient sounds of the bustling retail concourse, cozy bakeries, dining spots, and seamless connection to Tiong Bahru MRT station. 📍 Location: Tiong Bahru Plaza, Singapore 🎥 Quality: 4K 50fps 🎧 Format: Walking Tour / Ambient ASMR (No Talking) 📅 Date of filming: Oct 2026 Year Opened: 1995 Type: Centrally Managed (Frasers Property) History ------------ Tiong Bahru Plaza: The Heartbeat of the Central-South Heartland 1. The Opening (1995): A 1990s Suburban Pioneer The Launch: Developed by UOL Group (United Overseas Land), Tiong Bahru Plaza officially opened in late 1995, followed by its adjoining 20-storey commercial office tower (Central Plaza). Transit Integration: Built directly above Tiong Bahru MRT station (EW17) along the East-West Line, it was one of the earliest suburban malls designed with direct, covered, all-weather basement MRT integration, making it a critical commuter transit and shopping hub. Original 1990s Anchors: It housed a popular Eng Wah Cinemas multiplex on the top floor (later taken over by Golden Village). A sprawling basement supermarket originally anchored by NTUC FairPrice. Popular youth hangout spots in the late 90s, including fast-food chains, arcade centers, and casual family dining. 2. The First Refresh: Post-2000s Modernization In the mid-2000s, Tiong Bahru Plaza went through phased Asset Enhancement Initiatives (AEIs) to keep pace with changing suburban demographics as older estates around Bukit Merah, Henderson, and Tiong Bahru began seeing an influx of young families moving into BTO flats and nearby condominiums. Golden Village (GV) Tiong Bahru: The cinema was modernized into a state-of-the-art GV multiplex, remaining the primary cinema destination for residents from Redhill all the way to Outram. 3. The Landmark Revamp (2015–2016): The S$90M Heritage-Inspired Makeover The S$90 Million Overhaul: Between 2015 and mid-2016, UOL embarked on a massive, comprehensive transformation of the entire shopping mall. Exterior & Interior Redesign: The old, dated 1990s tiled facade was completely stripped away and replaced with a contemporary curved glass-and-terracotta exterior. Inside, walkways and atrium voids were widened, and a new outdoor open-air playground on Level 3 was introduced; designed around a retro "Bird Cage" and mosaic dragon theme that paid direct homage to Tiong Bahru's famous heritage as an old-school bird-singing hub. Expanded F&B & Lifestyle: Retail and dining options were expanded to over 150 stores. A modernized, upscale FairPrice Finest was introduced in the basement, along with an open-concept food hall and international lifestyle brands like Uniqlo. 4. Balancing Heritage Estate with Modern Retail Tiong Bahru Plaza enjoys a unique identity: on one side, it borders the quiet, conserved Art Deco walk-up flats and hipster cafe enclave of Moh Guan and Eng Hoon streets; on the other, it serves the bustling, multi-generational HDB heartland of Bukit Merah and Jalan Membina. It remains one of the most consistently packed neighborhood malls in the southern corridor, effortlessly blending convenience, dining, and daily essentials. 5. The End of an Era: GV Tiong Bahru Closes (March 2026) The Milestone Departure: After roughly 17 years of operation (having taken over the space from Eng Wah Cinemas in 2006), Golden Village officially closed its doors at Tiong Bahru Plaza on March, 2026 following the expiration of its lease, with Xventure Park taking over the space. A Neighborhood Staple: For nearly three decades across both the Eng Wah and GV eras, Level 4 was the quintessential weekend hangout for families, students, and couples across Bukit Merah, Redhill, and Outram. The Space Reimagined: The former cinema hall footprint on the top floor was reconfigured into an expanded lifestyle, enrichment, and leisure zone, bringing in family entertainment and wellness tenants to adapt to changing suburban footfall.
