Sabhya spent a day inside the Hotel of Death in Banaras - Kashi Labh Mukti Bhavan, a place in Varanasi where people come to spend the final days of their lives. There is a centuries-old belief that those who die in Kashi (Varanasi) attain moksha - liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth. And for decades, Kashi Labh Mukti Bhavan has given people who believe they are nearing the end of their lives a place to stay and wait for that final moment. Sabhya is 21. His life, in many ways, has only just begun. So he went inside Mukti Bhavan to spend a day with people standing at the opposite end of life speaking to them about death, fear, family, regrets and what life looks like when there may not be much of it left. What began as an attempt to understand why people travel to Banaras to die became much more real when, during Sabhya’s time inside the Bhavan, one of its residents passed away. This is a day inside Banaras’ Hotel of Death and an attempt to understand the strange relationship that Kashi has with life, death and moksha.
