Our friendship grew late, and coincidentally, once we had both come abroad. In this episode of Yesterday Once More, we turn the lens on ourselves: we tell our own life histories, then try to theorise them.
In this episode, I (Dr Manzoorul Abedin) am joined by my good friend Dr Bijoy Lal Basu for a candid, reflective conversation about growing up in Bangladesh, leaving home, and finding an old connection in a new place. Along the way, we ask how sociological ideas help explain the turns our lives have taken. In this episode, we discuss:
How an acquaintance from home became a close friendship abroad
The turning points, people and places that shaped us
What we carried with us across borders, and what changed in value
How studying and working in higher education abroad gave us a critical lens on education policy at home in Bangladesh: what it has achieved, where it has fallen short, and the directions it could take in future
Language, identity, and becoming someone new in another language
Change and continuity: who we were, who we are, and what we pass on
This episode was recorded live on Zoom on 24 October 2026 and streamed to Facebook and YouTube.
Tell us in the comments: has a friendship of yours only become close after you moved away? When did your own life take an unexpected turn?
