We usually picture electrons as things that move—carrying current, energy, and information. But at sufficiently low density and temperature, their mutual repulsion can organize them into a periodic state known as a Wigner crystal.
In this video, we explore a 2026 Nature Physics study that used exciton spectroscopy to distinguish the static order and internal dynamics of an electron crystal in monolayer WSe₂. We follow the story from Eugene Wigner’s prediction to Wigner polarons, all-optical spin control, and the weakening of crystalline order under intense optical excitation.
“Melting” here does not mean that the sample turned into an ordinary liquid. It means that an optical signature of periodic electron order nearly disappeared. The microscopic cause is not yet settled: ordinary lattice heating appears insufficient, while electronic heating and exciton-mediated screening remain open possibilities.

The IG segment is a clearly labeled speculative extension by ThothSaem, not a conclusion of the paper.
