Škocjan Caves | Earth's Largest Underground Canyon (4K)

Somewhere beneath the hills of Slovenia lies a canyon no satellite has ever seen. In this 4K journey, three travelers walk the full visitor route of the Škocjan Caves — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986 and Slovenia's first natural site on the list — from the village of Matavun down into roughly six kilometers of underground passages sinking more than two hundred meters below the surface. Inside a mountain in Slovenia there is a canyon 146 metres deep with a river still cutting it. Skocjan Caves hold the largest known underground canyon on Earth, and this is the walk through it. The Reka river vanishes into the rock here and does not surface again for 34 kilometres. The path crosses it on a bridge 45 metres above the water - close enough that the sound never stops. UNESCO listed the site in 1986. The temperature holds at 12 C every day of the year, whatever July is doing outside. You will cross the Cerkvenik Bridge above the underground canyon of the Reka River — roughly two kilometers long, with walls rising up to 150 meters and standing more than 120 meters apart, one of the largest known underground river canyons on Earth — stand inside Martel's Chamber, whose volume exceeds two million cubic meters, meet the olm (the "baby dragon" of the karst), and climb back into daylight through the great collapse valley of Velika dolina. The Reka itself vanishes here and travels roughly 24 miles (39 km) underground before re-emerging in Italy as the Timavo, a mile from the Adriatic. The cave holds about 12 °C all year round.
