Notch — The Father Who Stayed | The Legendary Lion Who Chose His Sons Over the Throne

Notch — The Father Who Stayed | The Legendary Lion Who Chose His Sons Over the Throne Notch — the legendary lion of Kenya’s Masai Mara, also known as Kali — lived a story unlike almost any other lion. From rising to power in the famous Marsh Pride to becoming one of Africa’s most remarkable coalition leaders, Notch built a legacy that went far beyond strength and territory. In 2004, Notch and his partner Light Male took control of the legendary Marsh Pride, made famous by Big Cat Diary. During his golden years, Notch became the father of several famous lions and lionesses, including the “Three Graces” — Joy, Charm and Beauty. After Light Male died in 2005, Notch survived and ruled alone for nearly two years. Then came 2007. Three younger males challenged him, forcing the aging king from his territory. But instead of abandoning his five young sons, Notch stayed with them. Notch II, Caesar, Grimace, Ron and Mighty Long were still only around two and a half years old. What followed became one of the most extraordinary lion family stories ever recorded. From 2008 to 2017, the father-and-sons coalition dominated large parts of the eastern Masai Mara, becoming known for their powerful coalition, unusual hunting behavior and long reign. They were famous for taking on dangerous prey such as buffalo and even hippos. One by one, the legendary lions disappeared. Long vanished in 2010. Notch died in 2013 at more than 14 years old. Grimace disappeared. Ron was killed in 2016, and Caesar died in 2017. But Notch's bloodline continued. Notch II lived on and formed another successful family line, while later research confirmed that the famous Rekero coalition were descendants of Notch. This is the story of Notch — the lion who lost the throne, stayed with his sons, and built a dynasty that outlived him.
