The journey was full of little discoveries. From stopping for fresh coconut water and roadside wood apples to exploring a petrol station shop filled with unusual Japanese and Chinese snacks, including Milo-flavoured KitKat, there was something interesting at almost every stop. And of course, no Sri Lankan road trip is complete without trying the local food! We stopped at a roadside restaurant for an incredible traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry meal, with chicken curry, dal, brinjal, hog plum curry and several delicious side dishes. One of those meals you wish you could have again! After reaching Polonnaruwa, we checked into Lavish, a lovely homestay surrounded by trees and paddy fields. Later in the evening, we headed to Parakrama Samudra, the enormous ancient reservoir built during the reign of King Parakramabahu I. After a long, hot tuk tuk ride, we enjoyed a refreshing dip in the water when something caught our attention on the opposite side of the reservoir. A WILD ELEPHANT! We had been travelling through areas surrounded by national parks, hoping to spot elephants along the road. But we never expected to find one in such a beautiful setting, with the reservoir and sunset in the background. Just another unexpected day on our Sri Lanka tuk tuk adventure!
