Today, we’re leaving Baghdad early in the morning and traveling south to Najaf, one of Iraq’s most important historic and religious cities. Our adventure takes us through traditional Iraqi markets, local restaurants, bustling streets, historic mosques, bakeries, and incredible street food discoveries. From freshly baked Iraqi bread and traditional breakfasts to famous Iraqi kebabs, shawarma, grilled meats, and local sweets, Najaf offers a fascinating journey into authentic Iraqi food culture But this adventure isn’t only about food. It’s about discovering the real Iraq through its people, traditions, everyday life, and extraordinary hospitality. FROM BAGHDAD TO NAJAF We leave Baghdad around 6:30 in the morning, heading toward Najaf. The journey takes several hours, but along the way, we discover fascinating places, food traditions, and welcoming people. One of our first stops introduces us to traditional Iraqi bread, freshly prepared in a local bakery. The smell of bread coming out of the oven is impossible to resist! TRADITIONAL IRAQI BREAD Bread is an essential part of Iraqi food culture. We meet local bakers and learn about traditional Iraqi bread, different flour qualities, and the importance of fresh bread in everyday meals. Watching the bakers at work is a reminder of how traditional craftsmanship continues to shape Iraq’s culinary identity. THE HISTORIC GREAT MOSQUE OF KUFA Our journey includes a visit to the historic Great Mosque of Kufa, one of Iraq’s most important religious landmarks. We explore its architecture, history, and spiritual significance while learning about the stories and traditions associated with this extraordinary place. The mosque represents an important chapter in Iraq’s rich cultural and religious heritage. TRADITIONAL IRAQI BREAKFAST Arriving in Najaf, we begin exploring local restaurants and traditional breakfast specialties. We discover Iraqi dishes prepared with eggs, bread, and traditional ingredients, along with the distinctive flavors that make Iraqi breakfasts so memorable. Food is an important part of everyday life in Najaf, and every restaurant has its own story. IRAQI KEBABS: SOME OF THE BEST IN THE WORLD! One of the highlights of this episode is discovering authentic Iraqi kebabs. I visit local restaurants where experienced cooks prepare kebabs, tikka, and traditional grilled meats. We explore the differences between Iraqi kebab preparations, including the famous lighter-colored kebabs. Watching the cooks prepare the meat, shape it onto skewers, and grill it over fire is an experience in itself. Iraqi kebabs have a distinctive texture, flavor, and preparation style that make them truly special. IRAQI SHAWARMA & STREET FOOD Our food discoveries continue through Najaf’s busy streets. We stop at local food shops, discover freshly prepared sandwiches, and taste traditional Iraqi shawarma served in samoon bread. Iraqi samoon, with its distinctive shape and texture, is one of the country’s most recognizable breads. Combined with delicious fillings, it creates some of Iraq’s most satisfying street food sandwiches. TRADITIONAL NAJAF BREAD & SWEETS As we continue exploring, we discover more traditional bakery products and local specialties. One of the interesting discoveries is a traditional Najafi bread prepared with sugar and sesame. We meet local producers and explore the ingredients, preparation methods, and traditions behind their products. These small food businesses are an essential part of Iraq’s culinary heritage. EXPLORING NAJAF’S TRADITIONAL SOUKS Our journey continues through the vibrant markets of Najaf. Walking along the busy shopping streets, we discover shops selling traditional products, food, bread, nuts, fruits, and everyday essentials. The markets are filled with movement, conversations, colors, and the energy of everyday Iraqi life. This is one of my favorite ways to discover a country: walking through its streets, meeting local people, and understanding their traditions. THE REAL IRAQ: PEOPLE, FOOD & HOSPITALITY What makes Iraq unforgettable isn’t only its delicious food or historic landmarks. It’s the people. Everywhere we travel, we’re welcomed with generosity, kindness, and incredible hospitality. From restaurant owners and bakers to market vendors and people we meet along the streets, every encounter reveals another beautiful side of Iraq. This is the Iraq I want to share with the world. A country of history, culture, extraordinary food, vibrant markets, and wonderful people. 🇮🇶 Welcome to Najaf, Iraq!
