What is the Trisagion Prayer?
The Trisagion (meaning “Thrice-Holy”) is one of the most ancient and revered hymns of the Christian Church. Its name comes from the Greek words Tri (three) and Hagios (holy), referring to the threefold proclamation:
“Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us.”
This hymn is deeply rooted in the worship of heaven, echoing the angelic praise described in Scripture (Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8). In the tradition of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and other Oriental Orthodox Churches, the Trisagion occupies a central place in the Holy Qurbana and daily prayers, leading the faithful into reverence, repentance, and contemplation of God's holiness.
The Trisagion is not merely a song of praise; it is a profound confession of faith in the Holy Trinity and an acknowledgment of God's eternal majesty, power, and mercy. Through this prayer, believers join the worship of the angels, offering glory to the One who is Holy, Mighty, and Immortal.
May this sacred hymn inspire us to lift our hearts toward God, seek His mercy, and participate in the ceaseless worship of heaven.
✠ Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy upon us. ✠
