Our 240 Sq Ft Off-Grid Cabin Is Starting to Look Like a Tiny Home

After 15 months wrapped in Tyvek, our 240-square-foot off-grid cabin is finally getting its steel siding, and it's starting to look like a proper little home in the woods! In this episode of Off Grid Engineering, we're tackling the finishing details that make all the difference. From installing the last window and fitting custom-bent steel trims to working through some tricky corners and replacing pieces that didn't quite meet my standards, there's plenty of craftsmanship, problem-solving, and the occasional bit of head-scratching. Working with sheet metal has turned out to be surprisingly satisfying. Once you learn a few tricks for cutting, bending, and fitting the different trim profiles, you start to see how it all comes together. And then comes the big moment: the first wall of stone-gray steel siding goes up, completely transforming the appearance of our little wilderness cabin. But life at the cabin is never entirely predictable. While searching through some old drone footage late one night, I make an extraordinary discovery connected to a tractor theft from years ago. Something I'd long given up hope of finding turns out to have been hiding in plain sight all along! Of course, there's also the usual off-grid adventure. Even a simple trip to town involves the amphibious Argo, a journey down the river, and a fair bit of travelling just to pick up supplies. We're building this cabin ourselves, deep in the northern Ontario wilderness, with the hope of creating a little place that will stand for a hundred years. Every piece of trim, every carefully fitted corner, and every new sheet of siding brings us another step closer.
