By the score I could have entered a little sooner, but tonight that gap looked beautiful. The bass held the silence deep beneath it, and I could place the next word with ease. Ah, I thought — tonight we're really breathing together. Through the set, I closed my eyes more than once. Not because I was singing well, but because tonight's sound felt more natural to take in through the skin than to follow with the eyes. The presence of the room, the clear little sound of glasses, the light from the distant shelves — it all blended together, just slightly. After I came down from the stage, I sat in the dressing room for a while without taking off the necklace. Going straight home felt too soon, as if tonight's air was still lingering at my throat. I sat in front of the mirror, took one sip of water before letting my hair down. On the nights I've sung well, I never feel in a hurry to say much afterward. I only find myself remembering the cool, round metal of that microphone, and the light that had gathered around it. Tonight, I didn't so much sing well as fit in beautifully.
