Derby then and now : Friargate bridge, Station, GNR Warehouse vertical aerial photos 1948 to 2026

☑ Please read the description below as I have detailed all the things of interest that you can see have changed as well as bit of history you may not know. I have made this fading then and now video using two vertical top-down photographs of a location, one taken by the RAF in the 1940's and one from Google Maps Satellite view, I have lined them up precisely with each other so that you can watch as it fades back and forth to reveal what has changed in the decades that have passed between the two views. Sometimes the changes are massive, sometimes they are subtle, its well worth taking your time looking at different areas of the view as you will keep spotting things. ☑ It takes a lot of time to get the two views lined up with each other so precisely as the old 1940's RAF photographs are not taken on northerly flightpaths, so it means having to rotate the 2026 view around until North matches up with North in the 1940's photographs. Then I have to match the scale, aspect ratio, Pixel spread, lens distortion and dimensions but I think the great effort I put into making these "vertical photo then and now" videos is well worth it, let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the effort I put in and if you would like to see more. ☑ To get the most out of these presentations you really need to view them on a big screen or least a PC/Laptop with a proper screen as viewing them on a small phone screen you simply won’t be able to see all the details properly. If you open the video in the YouTube App on your phone and you are on your homes Wi-Fi network and have a smart TV turned on (TV's have had this YT casting feature since 2016). Simply tap the cast icon (next to the Gear icon on the screen) and select your TV from the list, you may have to type in a code to pair it, you now know how to enjoy my videos in 4K ! If you don’t have a Smart TV or a PC then the best thing is to at least install the YouTube app and view the videos in that in Fullscreen mode, its worth noting that once you are playing a video you can zoom in on the video using two fingers as a way of seeing more details. ► Points of interest in this video : This view is centred over the Friar Gate Goods Yard which is currently (2026) being restored by Wavensmere Homes. In the 1948 view you can see the former Friar Gate railway line heading to Friar Gate station. Notice all the railway sidings in this view. The 2026 view doesn’t actually show how it looks now as the site of the former Friar Gate station has since been demolished and houses have been built on it, also the old student accommodation on Agard Street is shown as part demolished but this has since all gone and replaced with the Cavendish Building. To the left of the goods yard, you can see the oval racetrack of the Greyhound Stadium which was built inside the former Derby Gaol (a prison built in 1827). It became Derby Greyhound Stadium in 1933, the site was then changed in the 1990's to become Vernon Gate. You can see how the Friar Gate railway line used to travel over a viaduct across Agard Street and Markeaton Brook and along Ford Street. Notice the three gasometers between Cavendish Street and Willow Row, these were part of the gas works. There is evidence of this company around today : Next time you’re on Friar Gate walk to the left of St Weburgh's church and you will see the 1889 red brick building "Derby Gas Light coke company" On the far left of both views you can see where Uttoxeter Old Road used to go over the Friar Gate line. Note how things such as Duckworth Square do not appear in either view as they came and went ! Any other things of note you have spotted? leave a comment.
