Georges Lemaître never saw a reason to choose between faith and science. A Belgian priest, mathematician and cosmologist, he followed Einstein’s equations to a conclusion Einstein himself initially resisted: the universe was expanding. He later proposed his “primeval atom”, an important precursor to what became the modern Big Bang model. Georges imagines Lemaître near the end of his life, looking back: from Charleroi and the First World War to Louvain, Cambridge, his encounters with Einstein, his disagreement with Rome over using cosmology as proof of Creation, and finally the discovery of the cosmic microwave background. It is not a song about science versus religion. For Lemaître, there was no conflict to resolve. They were different questions - and he simply followed where the numbers led.
