Music/Created by Alex © A.I.C Music The Flower-Fringed River in a Moonlit Night Zhang Ruoxu Tr. Zhuo Zhenying In spring the brimming river melts into the sea, O’er which the moon serene arises with the tide. The river does undulate a myriad li, And th’ moon, chasing th’ waves, reveals a world vast and wide. The river meanders in th’ landscape nice and fair, While th’ trees and flowers look nebulous in th’ moon’s glow, As if an invisible frost were filling th’ air And bedimming the sand-bar in its peaceful flow. The dustless air and th’ river harmonize in hue, The wheel-like lonely moon above is hanging bright. What was the man who happened first the moon to view? When did the moon begin to cast on men its light? In its endless line eternity men obtains, And year after year just the same the moon remains. For whom the moon’s been waiting? There’s no way to know, ’Tis only clear the river’s surging onward, though. The cloud having floated away, a sadness keen Now hovers o’er the riverside with maples green. P’rhaps others are sailing too tonight? But then where Are their sweets who should find their yearning hard to bear? The elfish moon o’er the storey-house ’tis sad to see, Which lays bare the dressing table of th’ absentee. Th’ fluttering screens try to dispel its light in vain; After whisking it comes to th’ washing block again! We yearn for each other, but can’t each other hear. I wish I could, riding on light, fly to my dear! Th’ swans seem aimless, and no conveyance does light make; The fishes swim and dive, but just ripples appear. Th’ dream of fallen flowers on th’ pool disturbed my rest Last night — at th’ long absence of my love I’m distressed. Oh, washing down the river, spring is nearly o’er, And lo, the moon is sinking o’er the pool in the west! Th’ distance ’tween Jieshi and Xiaoxiang seems to increase May there be men who’ve reached home like a pleasant breeze. Half hidden in the mistiness the moon still glows With love, which fills th’ river and permeates the trees!
