Getting into college is a big deal. But getting there is only the first step. How do students navigate independence, manage their health, communicate with professors, and bounce back when things don't go as planned?
In this conversation, I sit down with Justin, founder and principal adviser of The Dean on Demand, to talk about what happens after the acceptance letter, and how parents can help their students prepare for real life on campus.
With our combined experience in higher education, college consulting, and student success, we discuss:
College independence: Managing time, meals, studying, and all the everyday responsibilities that come with living on your own.
The parent role shift: How to support your student without taking over or solving every problem for them.
Health and wellness: Preparing students to manage their physical and mental health and navigate campus health resources.
Communicating with professors: Understanding syllabi, handling missed classes, and advocating for yourself professionally.
Tests, grades, and setbacks: Using feedback to improve, learning from a disappointing grade, and understanding that one test doesn't define your college experience.
Our biggest takeaway? College success isn't just about getting good grades. It's about learning how to navigate challenges, use available resources, and become an independent, capable adult.
Parents, you don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is ask the right questions and let your student learn to find the answers themselves.
