My 1 Credit Clear (1CC/ALL) of Contra, a 1987 run 'n gun game from Konami. The run has a final score of 1,322,900 points and was played with default settings on the Japan set 1 version of the game on WolfMAME v0.287. No autofire was used.
This is a much messier run than most of my 1 credit clears of other games, thanks to several deaths in stage 2. But I decided to upload the run regardless, because one of the most appealing aspects of Contra (arcade) is that it's shorter and more forgiving than a lot of other arcade games. A full run usually takes under ten minutes, and you get awarded with so many extra lives during a run that you can usually die seven times and still clear the game.
Contra took me a couple hours to learn, and although I imagine it would take longer for people without arcade experience it's still far from impossible! I think this is a great first arcade 1CC to go for, if you're a retro console game player who wants to give arcade games a try.
As for the game itself, I don't really know what to say about it. Contra and Metal Slug have done such an effective job of monopolizing what everyone thinks a run 'n gun can be these days that almost every run 'n gun from the past 30 years has contraslug-style gameplay, which means that the original Contra just feels like an extremely "normal" run 'n gun. Albeit one that has some odd boss design focusing on static turrets, lots of random respawning popcorn enemies, and such strong alternate weapons that recovering after a death with your default shot can be a struggle. So it's basically a modern run 'n gun with a hint of late 80s arcade design.
I personally prefer spy-style run 'n guns like Elevator Action and Rolling Bird to these contraslug-style games, but I still had a good time with Contra. I'd love to see what Super Contra (arcade) does with the formula too!
