25. The End of the Cold War

Dr. Taimur Rahman explains how the desire to end the confrontation with the West was at the heart of the Westernising intellectuals. These intellectuals came to occupy the highest positions in the leading party and state organs of the Soviet society. Under the leadership of Gorbachev, and in the name of "reviving Leninism", they in fact systematically destroyed socialism in order to end the Cold War and develop better relations with the West. However, the restoration of capitalism resulted in such catastrophic economic description that it has placed the agenda of socialism back on the pages of history.
