Acclaimed filmmaker Payal Kapadia speaks about 'All We Imagine As Light', winning India's first Grand Prix at Cannes, the process of 'art' films and championing more Gujarati stories in the future. Kapadia is an Indian filmmaker. Her film A Night of Knowing Nothing won the Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. In 2017, her short film Afternoon Clouds was the only Indian film selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival. In 2024, she won the Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for her film All We Imagine as Light. All We Imagine as Light (Malayalam: പ്രഭയായ് നിനച്ചതെല്ലാം) is a 2024 Malayalam-language drama. The cast includes Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, and Hridhu Haroon. The film was an international co-production involving companies from France, India, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Italy. It premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival on 23 May 2024. It was the first film from India to compete in the main competition since 1994 and won the Grand Prix. Told through the lens of Malayali nurses living in Mumbai who are both troubled by their relationships.
