What happens to a city when the routes that once made it important begin to disappear? Gaziantep was shaped by movement — of people, goods, ideas and cultures. For centuries, the city existed within a wider network connecting Anatolia, Mesopotamia, Aleppo and the Mediterranean. Its streets, bazaars, hans and workshops were not isolated elements, but parts of a larger economic and cultural landscape. Then the world changed. The opening of the Suez Canal, the transformation of regional trade routes, the rise of modern transportation, and later the political division of the region altered Gaziantep's relationship with its historical hinterland — particularly Aleppo. But Gaziantep did not disappear. It transformed. The city shifted from a traditional trading centre toward industrial production, while rapid population growth created new layers of urban development: historic neighbourhoods, informal settlements, industrial areas, apartment districts and expanding urban edges. Today, these layers exist side by side. Gaziantep can therefore be read as a patchwork city — a city assembled over time from different fragments, periods and ambitions. Some have been carefully preserved. Others have been transformed, replaced or almost forgotten. This walk through Gaziantep is an attempt to read those layers through the streets themselves. What was preserved? What was lost? And perhaps most importantly: Was something missed along the way? This is not simply a journey through an old city. It is an exploration of the tension between memory and transformation, and of what happens when a city tries to shape its future while holding on to its heritage...
