Sweeter Than Sweet Tea, Spicier Than Texas Pete Hot Sauce.

She sets the glass down before he asks. Ice already sweating. Lemon cut thin the way her mama did it. Sweet enough to stain the spoon. That is the first week. She learns the truck by the sound of the door, leaves the porch light on, and says his name like it already belongs to the house. Then Tuesday comes. She does not speak until the plates are cleared. He told her mother they were fine. They were not fine. She reaches for the Texas Pete without looking. Two shakes on eggs that did not need it. The bottle hits the counter harder than the words. If he is going to lie, lie better, or do not come home smelling like somebody else’s cigarette. This is a slow Southern story-song about a woman who will not split herself in half. Sweet tea on the days she is keeping him. Texas Pete on the days she is keeping herself. A couch at 2 a.m. A cry in the grocery aisle. A fight about money in the same kitchen where she first poured the tea. Her mama on the phone asking if he is feeding her girl. Two glasses in the doorway. The bottle left where her hand can find it. He stops asking the weather what it is going to be. Glass out. Bottle in reach. Soft, he takes the sweet. Hot, he stays for the burn. He does not trade one for the other. He does not get to.
