The finish on a piano does more than determine its appearance. It also affects durability, maintenance, and repair costs. In this overview, Michael from the Piano Technician Academy explains the two most common finishes found on modern and vintage pianos: polyester and lacquer. Polyester is the finish used on most modern pianos. Available in high-gloss black, white, walnut, mahogany, and other colors, it is extremely durable and highly resistant to scratches and everyday wear. While polyester offers excellent long-term protection, repairs can be more complex and expensive because relatively few technicians specialize in restoring this type of finish. Lacquer, commonly found on older pianos and many satin-finish instruments, is softer and more susceptible to scratches. However, it is much easier and more affordable to repair. Small imperfections can often be filled, resprayed with lacquer, and blended seamlessly into the surrounding finish, making lacquer a practical choice for pianos that experience frequent handling or transportation. Many concert pianos feature a satin black lacquer finish rather than a glossy surface. Although satin finishes can show wear over time, they are significantly easier to restore after scratches or minor damage. Satin polyester finishes are also available, combining the durability of polyester with the easier touch-up characteristics of a satin surface. Understanding the differences between polyester and lacquer can help piano owners make informed decisions when purchasing, maintaining, or restoring an instrument. Each finish offers unique advantages depending on the piano's intended use, appearance, and maintenance needs. Ready to build your skills as a piano technician?
