How do you honestly say how you feel in Dutch? ☕ Learn Dutch through a real-life coffee-machine conversation about feelings and emotions. In this A2-B1 lesson, Leo and Maya show you how to answer “How are you?” more naturally. Practise Dutch speaking and Dutch listening with useful sentences, common mistakes, and natural Dutch conversation. 🎯 What you'll learn in this episode: ✅ How to express emotions with ik ben (I am) and ik voel me (I feel) ✅ Useful words for feelings: blij (happy), verdrietig (sad), boos (angry), moe (tired), gestrest (stressed), gefrustreerd (frustrated), opgelucht (relieved), zenuwachtig (nervous), trots (proud) ✅ How to answer hoe gaat het? (how are you?) more naturally instead of always saying goed, met jou? (good, and you?) ✅ Why talking about feelings in a second language can feel mentally tiring: Je brein vertaalt, zoekt, voorspelt en controleert tegelijk, en dat kost veel energie. (Your brain translates, searches, predicts, and checks at the same time, which takes a lot of energy.) ✅ How your brain predicts language while listening ✅ Listening and speaking practice with feelings: ik ben moe (I am tired) ik ben blij (I am happy) ik voel me gestrest (I feel stressed) ✅ Common mistakes when talking about feelings: ❌ ik voel goed → ✅ ik voel me goed (I feel good) ❌ ik ben vervelend → ✅ ik verveel me (I am bored) ❌ gestresst → ✅ gestrest (stressed; correct spelling) ✅ The difference between boos (angry) and verdrietig (sad) ✅ A Dutch culture tip: direct but not dramatic We speak slowly and repeat important sentences so A2-B1 learners can build confidence in real Dutch conversations. Great for: ✅ Learners preparing for the Inburgering exam ✅ Learners practising spoken Dutch at A2 level ✅ Learners practising Dutch at B1 level ✅ NT2 students ✅ New residents of the Netherlands ✅ Anyone who wants to improve Dutch speaking and listening ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Opening coffee machine story 0:41 – Introduction: feelings and emotions 1:11 – Basic feeling words 2:54 – More specific feeling words 3:50 – Why speaking Dutch feels tiring 6:00 – Small experiment: your brain predicts language 7:12 – Practice repeating feelings 7:41 – Real-life situation: at the coffee machine 8:54 – Common mistakes 10:15 – Culture tip: direct but not dramatic 11:05 – Three actions for this week 12:19 – Summary 13:05 – Closing 💬 Practice Dutch with us!
