PV-TV All-Stooge Spectacular!! - Three Stooges Special

Spread out, knuckleheads! It's the PV-TV All-Stooge Spectacular!! It's colossal! It's terrific! It's even mediocre! This is a tribute to The Three Stooges compiled from public domain footage of all 6 (or is it 7... 8?) stooges from various eras of their careers. Assembled from: Sing a Song of Six Pants One of the four Columbia Three Stooges shorts that was accidentally allowed to fall into public domain. This one features Larry, Moe, and Shemp as tailors who get caught up in a crime caper. Shemp is my favorite stooge, so it's appropriate that a Shemp quip opens this special. Plane Nuts My first time seeing this was the Christmas where I got my first DVD player. Another gift was a DVD of the four public domain Columbia shorts and several MGM shorts featuring Ted Healy and his Stooges which consisted not only of Larry, Curly, and Moe at the time but also Bonnie Bonnell whom I consider to be the "seventh stooge" since she typically played a fourth "stooge" in Healy's stage act and in these early short comedy films. This one is one of my favorites because it gives us a glimpse of what Ted Healy and His Stooges' vaudeville act was like. It's a classic setup, a straight man trying to perform his act while constantly being interrupted by "stooges". Nertsery Rhymes Another MGM short featuring "Ted Healy and His Stooges" (including Bonnie Bonnell). This short was filmed in color which was fairly rare at the time. It's a pretty bizarre short with Moe, Curly, and Larry as Healy's children asking for a bed time story with footage from MGM musicals worked in. Bonnie appears as a fairy who lives in the closet. Thimk or Thwim This is an episode of The New 3 Stooges cartoon made after the Columbia Shorts had become popular on TV. The cartoons were voiced by the Stooges themselves (Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe) and each cartoon was bookended by live action segments. The live action parts here feature the broken down car that was used in other episodes. Aqua Net Hairspray Ad I wanted some of the clips in this special episode to be less familiar with Stooges fans, and this hairspray ad featuring the boys was unfamiliar even to me (I looked at a LOT of potential source videos). This ad begs the question, why did 1960s advertising executives think Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe were ideal for selling hairspray marketed exclusively to women? Brideless Groom One of the ubiquitous public domain Columbia Shorts. This one features Larry, Moe, and Shemp, plus character actor Emil Sitka (who almost became a Stooge himself, nearly replacing Larry in the final days of the act). This short was also briefly seen in Pulp Fiction ("Hold hands you love birds"), and features the lovely Christine McIntyre punching Shemp through a door! Swing Parade of 1946 This is the only public domain feature film with the lineup of Larry, Curly, and Moe. Curly is credited as Jerome which is interesting (to me at least) because I thought that only happened in a few very early film appearances (pre-Columbia). There's some fun gags that aren't just recycled from the Columbia Shorts, and the film is worth watching for that if nothing else. That Little Old Bombmaker This was the very first New 3 Stooges cartoon featuring Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe. It's the only one I recall seeing where the live action bookend segments are directly related to the cartoon segment. Instant Simoniz Ad Oddly enough, this 1960s advertisement for Instant Simoniz featuring Moe, Larry, and Curly Joe is one of the earliest things I remember seeing of The Three Stooges. There were some New 3 Stooges episodes on a VHS cartoon collection I owned as a child, which started an interest in the Stooges which became an obsession. Next I got a two VHS set that was supposed to have the notorious four public domain Columbia shorts but instead had a random mix of "rarities" like this ad. Africa Screams Why did I use an Abbott and Costello film in a Three Stooges special? Two reasons! One, it features literally the only public domain footage of Joe Besser. I wanted ALL the Stooges in the episode, and this is how I did it. Two, Shemp Howard is also in the movie. They even briefly appear in a scene together! Rumor has it that Lou Costello requested that Shemp's screen time be cut because he got more laughs. Disorder in the Court The only one of the "Columbia four" public domain shorts that features Curly as the third stooge. I didn't want to use too much of this one since it was a major part of PV-TV episode 40 (plus used in other episodes) but some bits of it came in handy for certain gags as I was putting the episode together. This film is wacky mayhem and still funny the hundredth time you watch it! Hey chowderhead!
