Aaron Trinh grew up knowing how deeply his father worried about his height. Standing 5'2", his father had struggled with how people treated him and hoped Aaron would have a different experience. He measured Aaron as a boy and had him drink milk every day, hoping he would grow taller. Years later, Aaron chose leg-lengthening surgery to go from 5'6" to 5'9", with his father’s support and financial help. For me, the surgery was something that I felt was a necessity,” Aaron says. In this interview, Aaron opens up about why he chose the procedure and what recovery was like. His father speaks anonymously about his own experiences, while surgeon Dr. Craig Robbins explains what the increasingly popular surgery entails. The cameras catch up with Aaron one year later as he undergoes a second surgery to remove hardware from his femurs. Despite the pain and long recovery, Aaron says he’s happy with his decision — and that those three inches were worth it.
