#joydivision #iancurtis #postpunk The Dark Myth of Ian Curtis: The True Story Behind Joy Division's Frontman If I had a chance, I would have a beer with Ian Curtis. Or two. Because, actually, I think he would have been great company. Curtis wasn't the permanently gloomy, distant figure we sometimes see in Control. Over the years, films, photographs, interviews, and the mythology surrounding Joy Division have turned him into something almost larger than life: the eternally miserable poet, dressed like an office worker, staring into the darkness. But there was another Ian Curtis. He could be funny. He joked around with his friends, enjoyed music and books, and was capable of being just as silly and quirky as anyone else. His former bandmates have spoken about that side of him, too. And that's what I want to talk about today. Not the tragic figure we already know from Control. But Ian Curtis the person: a musician, a husband, a friend, a reader, and a young man trying to figure out what to do with his life. 00:00 Curtis as a myth 02:12 Why people created the myth of Curtis 03:32 Curtis in Control 04:11 A book about Curtis 05:05 The real Curtis 05:19 Obsession with Bowie 05:35 Curtis liked clothes 05:52 Curtis was generous 06:11 Curtis' dark side 06:30 Curtis loved books 06:44 Joy Division members had fun 07:34 When Curtis was a kid 07:47 A fascinating detail 08:04 Peter Hook's memories 08:23 The "Hate" coat 08:46 Curtis' best movie portrayal 09:05 Ian could go mad 09:40 Was Curtis right-wing? 09:52 Romance with Honoré 10:07 Life problems 10:28 The impact of epilepsy 10:54 Curtis didn't feel like a star 11:27 How his bandmates joked about him 11:39 Curtis used lo laugh a lot 12:06 Was there a "real" Curtis? 12:19 Pub instead of the last goodbye 12:50 Gentle Ian 13:48 The mystery of Curtis' death 14:05 Curtis' legacy ____________________________________________________________________ On this channel, I talk about post-punk, shoegaze, jazz, emo, hip-hop, electronic music and movies.
