Hola! How should characters be introduced in movie scripts? The truth is there are no set rules that all professionals follow. Some writers provide detailed background information for their characters. Others keep it short and simple, like Amy Heckerling. Below are a couple of examples of how Amy Heckerling writes her character descriptions in the 1995 screenplay “Clueless.”
Over an upbeat song we see our heroine CHER and her friend, DIONNE, a stunning, African American girl in a montage of teenage activities. Cher is beautiful, rich, and damn happy.
JOSH, a cute college guy in a P.C. T-shirt appears from behind the refrigerator door.
ELTON, a clean cut young man, is organizing his C.D.’s.
TRAVIS, a spacey, long haired guy, raises his hand.
See how little information we know about the character when they’re first introduced? The writer doesn’t even include ages, just a brief statement of how the reader should depict this character. The character unfolds slowly throughout the script with their actions (Cher’s voiceover, Dionne’s interactions with Cher and her boyfriend, Josh’s playfulness with Cher, etc.). Sometimes less is more when you’re introducing your characters.
In this video, we’ll take a look at character descriptions and opening scenes for the following characters: Cher, Josh, Dionne, Tai, Cher’s father - Mel, Elton, Travis, Christian, Murray, and teachers Hall, Geist, and Stoeger. There are also snapshot descriptions of other various characters.
The screenplay is available online on screenplay database websites: imsdb and scripthive. Stream the movie on Paramount Plus (*as of September 2026. Subject to change.).
