Joy Jibrilu's life did not follow a straight line. From leaving The Bahamas for boarding school in England to building a life in Nigeria, teaching Grade 1 despite training as a barrister, leading a school, returning home, surviving a devastating illness and eventually becoming one of the country's most recognizable tourism leaders, every unexpected chapter prepared her for something she could not yet see. In this episode of Mentor Me, Joy sits with Anastarcia Palacious for an intimate conversation about the woman behind the titles and the experiences that shaped who she became. Joy shares what it was like leaving home as a child, navigating race and belonging in England, moving to Nigeria after marriage and discovering a career she never planned. She explains why accepting a Grade 1 teaching position became one of the most consequential decisions of her life, eventually leading her into school leadership and an effort that raised $2 million to build a new school. The conversation also goes somewhere far more personal. Joy opens up about the serious illness that changed her life, being told after her hospitalization that she might never speak fully in sentences or understand numbers again, and the long road back. She shares how that experience changed the way she sees purpose, opportunity, leadership and faith. Joy and Anastarcia also explore knowing your worth, women and compensation, representing The Bahamas to the world, why Joy refuses to call The Bahamas the “best little country,” the importance of authenticity in tourism, and what she meant when she told a graduating class: “Do not outsource your humanity.” And near the end, Joy reflects on the younger version of herself who struggled with confidence, comparison and feeling less than. This is a conversation about the unexpected places life takes us and what those chapters may be preparing us to become.
