Wyoming's Cloud Peak Nearly Destroyed Us ~ 26 Miles and 5,500 Ft of Gain in a Day - Goodbye Toenails

Cloud Peak in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains was our single-day adventure. What we got was a massive 24 mile, 5,500-foot day that pushed Adam, Sean, and me to our absolute limits. We left home and drove 13 hours to Buffalo, Wyoming, arriving late before getting a few hours of sleep. At 3:30 AM, we were back on our feet, driving toward the trailhead with one goal: climb Cloud Peak and make it back out in a single day. By around 5:00 AM, we started hiking into the Cloud Peak Wilderness for what would become one of the longest and most exhausting mountain days I've ever attempted. With roughly 24 miles of hiking, 5,500 feet of elevation gain, and more than 14 hours on the trail, there was no shortage of time to waste in order to summit and return to our car before dark. Cloud Peak rises to 13,175 feet and is the highest summit in Wyoming’s Bighorn Mountains. The surrounding Cloud Peak Wilderness covers nearly 192,000 acres and features rugged granite peaks with more than 100 miles of trails. It’s a spectacular and remote corner of Wyoming—and one that demands a lot from anyone trying to experience it in a single day. After more than 14 hours on our feet, we finally made it back to the trailhead completely destroyed. We went straight to bed, knowing that the next morning brought another 13-hour drive home. 24 miles. 5,500 feet of gain. 14+ hours on the trail. One massive Wyoming adventure.
