Six championships. Seven All-Star games. The defensive backbone of the greatest team basketball has ever seen. And a paycheck smaller than journeymen who never made an All-Star team in their lives. Scottie Pippen grew up one of twelve children in Hamburg, Arkansas, the son of a father in a wheelchair. He arrived at the University of Central Arkansas as a six-foot-one walk-on — and left it a six-foot-seven All-American. Drafted fifth overall in 1987 and traded to Chicago on draft night, he became everything Michael Jordan was not: the defender, the passer, the engine of the Bulls dynasty. Then, in July 1991, Pippen signed a seven-year, eighteen-million-dollar extension — against everyone's advice. As league salaries exploded, his deal became the greatest bargain in sports history. At one point he ranked around 122nd in NBA salary while being arguably the second-best player on the planet. The frustration boiled over in the 1997-98 Last Dance season, when he delayed foot surgery and sat out 35 games. Even Jordan said he was "totally underpaid." This is the story of the most underpaid superstar in NBA history — and one of the greatest to ever do it. Jordan never won a playoff series without Pippen; together they went 6-0 in the NBA Finals.
