Perched at 4,250 ft near Bhandardara, Ratangad (“Jewel Fort”) is an ancient fortress with over 1,000 years of history. Captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century for its commanding view of the Sahyadri trade corridors, it is also the origin of the sacred Pravara River. The fort is renowned for Nedhe (a natural rock “needle hole” carved by high winds) and the 1,200-year-old Hemadpanthi Amruteshwar Temple at its base village, Ratanwadi.
From Pune (~185 km, 5–5.5 hours), take NH 60 via Alephata, Otur, and Rajur to reach Ratanwadi. The trek takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours to ascend and spans 5–6 km one way. It features a moderate trail through lush forests, scenic ridge walks, and sturdy iron ladders leading up the cliffs. The best time to visit is July through December for monsoon waterfalls, sweeping views of Kalsubai and Arthur Lake, and post-monsoon wildflowers.
