Xiamen is a vibrant tourist city in southern China, but navigating it in a camper van can be challenging due to limited parking for larger vehicles. Despite this, we made the most of our time by visiting Ba Shi, a traditional wet market filled with delicious local snacks. This experience is a must for anyone looking to immerse themselves in authentic Chinese culture!
Parking was supposed to be tricky, but we just drove into multiple parking places and after a couple of them turned us down because of our size we just insisted at the third one that we are going to be back in one hour because we are going for lunch. They agreed under the condition that we gave them our car keys so they can move the van.
We walked through a couple of streets that looked a little bit like Portugal or southern France and ended up at the snack market.
The first thing that called my eye was a barbecued sea urchin with a egg filling.
that was delicious and almost tasted like it was steamed.
The next stop was a screaming lady selling huge barbecued oysters with a spicy garlic sauce. I actually don’t like cooked oysters, but somehow this old lady was very convincing.
Everything looked delicious, but the water chestnuts and pork wrapped in tofu skin sounded most interesting and it didn’t disappoint.
After all that walking was time to sit down and we chose a Misua noodle soup place where we added some liver and intestines. After adding a spicy kick and some vinegar, it was really unforgettable, I still sometimes think about it.
We quickly run to the sugarcane juice stand while our dog was waiting patiently.
After finishing the soup, our last stop was a weird looking fruit named Kiwano, where the woman just smashed up the inside and added some honey quite interesting, but a lot of seeds.
