When The Light Finds Us | Jon Onabowu | One Sound Music

We're excited to share a brand new live session on One Sound Music - "When The Light Finds Us" by drummer, composer and bandleader Jon Onabowu. Filmed at the beautiful Dalston Lane Studios in East London, this session marks a couple of firsts for us. It's our first instrumental video in a while and our first ever jazz fusion performance on the channel — something we've been wanting to do for a long time. Released as a single shortly before Jon's debut album Now's The Time which came out on the 22nd May, "When The Light Finds Us" is a composition that captures a unique feeling of warmth, optimism and clarity. Drawing inspiration from contemporary jazz, gospel, funk and the shimmering textures of 1980s Brit-funk, the piece unfolds through rich harmonies, fluid key changes and a groove that never stops moving forward. Speaking about the track, Jon explained that the title took years to find. During a writing session at vibraphonist Anatole Muster's home, a melody emerged alongside a series of modulations that would eventually shape the composition. When the title finally arrived, it perfectly captured the feeling of the music — that moment of spiritual and emotional clarity when light breaks through and things begin to make sense. For those unfamiliar with Jon's work, he is one of the most exciting voices in London's contemporary jazz scene. A Nigerian-British drummer and bandleader, his music blends jazz with influences from funk, hip-hop and gospel, creating a sound that is deeply groove-driven while remaining harmonically adventurous. He is also the founder of the Cosmic Fusion residency at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, now in its third year, which has become an important platform for London's new generation of jazz musicians. Alongside his own projects, Jon has collaborated and performed with artists including Theo Croker, Venna, Balimaya Project and Bubby Lewis. His debut album Now's The Time has been featured on playlists including UK Jazz, Fresh Finds Jazz and Somewhere Soul, and was recognised by COLORSxSTUDIOS Community Picks.
