OutRun C64 Nostalgia Edition - The Definitive 8 Bit Road Trip?

Today I'm taking a look at a very special version of OutRun on the Commodore 64. This is not the familiar European US Gold PAL version, and it isn't exactly the American version with the smoother road scrolling and redesigned Ferrari Testarossa either. What I'm playing today is the American version, further enhanced and refined by the legendary team at Nostalgia. If that name sounds familiar, it should. These are the same talented developers responsible for incredible Commodore 64 projects such as Ghosts 'n Goblins Arcade and Commando SE. So from the moment I loaded the game, I knew OutRun was in good hands. The first thing that immediately stood out to me was the smoother road scrolling. The roadside sprites still behave much like the previous versions, but the improved road movement itself makes the game noticeably easier on the eyes. The result is a more relaxing and enjoyable driving experience, especially during longer play sessions. Another impressive feature appears before the race even begins. The game automatically detects whether it is running on a PAL or NTSC system and adjusts itself accordingly. That means players get the same gameplay feel regardless of the hardware they are using. A nice touch, and a great example of the care and attention that went into this project. For Commodore 64 Ultimate users who want to try this version themselves, I have one important tip: Disable JiffyDOS before loading the game. The custom turbo loader created by Nostalgia does not play nicely with JiffyDOS enabled and may cause the game to lock up. The initial loading time is a little longer as a result, but once loaded, the experience feels surprisingly close to using a cartridge. Subsequent loads are very quick, with only a brief glimpse of the turbo loader in action. One final note for viewers: You may hear me suffer from a couple of coughing attacks during the recording. Thankfully it only happened twice and then stopped completely, so due to limited time I decided not to re-record the entire video.
