For Samuel Mchunu, graduating with a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering from the Durban University of Technology is far more than an academic achievement. It is a story of perseverance, sacrifice, personal growth and hope for a brighter future.
Raised in Bhamshela after beginning his schooling at Mathafeni Primary School in eFaye and later attending Siyaphumala High School, Samuel’s journey to graduation reflects the determination of a young man committed to changing his circumstances through education.
Although he has spent several years living in Pinetown with his father while studying at DUT, he proudly regards Bhamshela as home, a place that shaped his values, resilience and ambitions.
“Graduating with this degree means a lot to me personally,” Samuel shared. “It represents growth, perseverance, and the possibility of changing my life from where I come from to where I aspire to be. It is proof that hard work and determination can create new opportunities.”
Samuel chose Civil Engineering because of his passion for solving real-world problems and contributing to sustainable development. Over the years, his understanding of the profession evolved from a basic interest in infrastructure into a deep appreciation for the role engineers play in shaping communities and improving lives.
“In my first year, I had a basic understanding of Civil Engineering, but now I see it as a complex and impactful field that requires problem-solving, critical thinking, teamwork and responsibility,” he explained. “I now understand how important engineers are in shaping society.”
