Today we're exploring the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne, a building with a fascinating history dating back to Wyoming's territorial days. Plans for a capitol began in 1867, construction started in 1886, and the building was largely completed by 1888, before Wyoming became the nation's 44th state in 1890. The capitol features Wyoming sandstone, cherry, oak and butternut wood, historic legislative chambers, murals and paintings representing industry, pioneer life, law and transportation. The tour includes the governor's office, House and Senate chambers, historic Supreme Court room, territorial exhibits and a hands-on area teaching children about government and civics. Wyoming's pioneering role in women's voting rights is also highlighted, including former Governor Nellie Tayloe Ross, the first woman elected governor in U.S. history. The tour concludes with an unusual roadside attraction: an original section of the capitol's early-1900s dome roof, rescued from a scrapyard and displayed beside an abandoned 1892 school.
