Jack Johnson was never beaten in his prime — he was hunted instead. In 1908, he became the first Black heavyweight champion in history, and America never forgave him for it. His 1910 knockout of "Great White Hope" Jim Jeffries triggered race riots that killed dozens across the country. His open relationships with white women made him a federal target, and in 1913 he was convicted under a law twisted specifically to punish him — sending him into seven years of exile as a fugitive champion. He lost his title in a fight so exhausting and disputed that even he couldn't agree on how it ended. And decades later, it was something as small as being refused a meal at a diner that finally killed him. This is the true story of a man too good to lose in the ring — and a country that made sure he lost everything else.
