Joshua 13:1–33 marks a turning point in Israel’s conquest story. Joshua is now old, and God tells him that although much land remains unconquered, the time has come to "assign territories" to the tribes. The chapter lists the regions still awaiting possession—especially areas dominated by the Philistines and other Canaanite groups—and then details the land already allotted east of the Jordan to Reuben, Gad, and the half‑tribe of Manasseh. Moses had granted these eastern territories earlier, including cities, pasturelands, and regions formerly ruled by kings like Sihon and Og. The Levites receive "no territorial inheritance", because their portion is serving the Lord. Overall, the chapter shifts the narrative from warfare to settlement, emphasizing God’s faithfulness in giving Israel the land and the importance of orderly distribution among the tribes.
