The historic Old Town is surrounded by impressive defensive walls that climb the mountainside behind the city. These fortifications helped protect Kotor for centuries and remain one of its most recognizable landmarks. Because of its extraordinary cultural and natural setting, the Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of the most fascinating things about Kotor is its location. The city sits at the innermost part of the Bay of Kotor, surrounded by steep limestone mountains.
