On 25 December 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as leader of the Soviet Union. After the news broke in London, ITN interviewed former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher and Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock, both of whom paid tribute to Gorbachev as one of the great reformers of world history.
