Archerfield Golf Club sits on a spectacular 550-acre private estate on Scotland’s legendary Golf Coast in East Lothian, about 20 miles from Edinburgh, between the famous courses of Muirfield and North Berwick.
It features two contrasting championship links courses designed by David J. Russell (opened around 2004–2006), top-tier practice facilities, and a stylish yet relaxed clubhouse. The club prioritizes pure enjoyment of the game in a warm, home-from-home atmosphere over strict etiquette — their motto is “We Play a Different Game.”
The Courses
Fidra Links (par 72, up to about 6,942–6,950 yards from the tips) is one of Scotland’s most spectacular modern courses. Named after the nearby Fidra Island and its iconic lighthouse (said to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island), it offers a beautiful hybrid layout.
The early holes wind through avenues of towering Scots pines with wide fairways and sculpted bunkering (evoking a more inland or Pinehurst-like feel). From around the short but testing 12th onward it opens into more traditional coastal linksland with firm, fast-running turf, gorse, rolling fairways, and views toward the Firth of Forth, Bass Rock, and the lighthouse. Greens are large, subtly contoured, and often feature run-up areas. It is playable for all abilities but rewards precision and an “A-game” to score well.
Dirleton Links (par 72, up to about 6,946 yards) is the more traditional, rugged Scottish links and is often called a true “golfer’s golf course.” Land here has hosted golf since at least the 15th century. It plays more inland through open heathland and dunes, with the magnificent 17th-century Archerfield House providing a majestic backdrop.
Expect tighter fairways in places, deep pot bunkers (many with revetted faces), gorse, ditches/burns, subtle slopes, and natural contours. The course demands accuracy and good strategy; the back nine especially can punish wayward shots. Greens are pure and a joy to putt on, with classic links characteristics including run-up options. It feels firmer and more exposed to the wind than Fidra.
Both courses are maintained to tournament standards, with excellent conditioning year-round.
Practice Facilities
Widely regarded as among the best: dual-ended driving range, covered bays with Toptracer technology, two short-game areas near the clubhouse, and three high-quality putting greens. There is also a state-of-the-art Performance Centre for coaching and club fitting.
The Clubhouse
A refined yet comfortably informal haven (colonial-style, completed around 2007). It includes:
• Elegant locker rooms with wooden lockers, lounge areas, excellent showers (Bamford products), soft towels, robes, slippers, and a helpful locker-room steward (shoe cleaning, etc.).
• Professional shop stocked with stylish golf attire and leisurewear.
• Restaurant, bar, and lounge open daily for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner — featuring sofas to sink into, a suntrap outdoor balcony terrace, and a dining room that feels luxurious but relaxed. Local Scottish produce features heavily.
Overall, Archerfield delivers world-class links golf in a private, scenic, and welcoming setting that feels special from the moment you arrive. Ideal for members, guests, and carefully arranged visitor experiences.
