On October 13, 1864, several hundred Comanche and Kiowa warriors raided the Elm Creek settlements in Young County, Texas. At Elizabeth FitzPatrick's ranch they killed her daughter and carried off her granddaughters, five-year-old Lottie and eighteen-month-old Millie Durgan, along with the family of Britt Johnson. Lottie came home. Millie did not. For decades the Kiowas reported her dead, and her grandmother died still searching.
In 1930 an elderly Kiowa woman named Sain-toh-oodie Goombi came forward and said she was that baby. This video follows the raid, the secret her Kiowa family kept, the 1930 newspapers and her visit to Texas, and the evidence on both sides of a question historians still argue about: was she really Millie Durgan?
