Step aboard one of the most iconic dark rides in America! Join me for a POV ride through Trimper’s Haunted House in Ocean City, Maryland—a ride I’ve been enjoying for over 40 years. This legendary attraction first opened in 1964 after Granville Trimper was inspired by classic dark rides he saw at Glen Echo Park. He hired renowned haunted attraction designer Bill Tracy, whose company, Outdoor Dimensional Display Co., created some of the most imaginative dark rides of the era. Together they transformed the former Windsor Theater site into what would become one of the most beloved attractions on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Bill Tracy is considered one of the greatest dark ride designers in amusement history. Besides the Haunted House, he also created Ocean City’s Ghost Ship (1965) and Pirates Cove (1971), along with dozens of classic attractions across the United States. His signature style combined blacklight effects, optical illusions, hand-crafted monsters, humor, and just enough scares to create unforgettable experiences. In 1988, Trimper’s Haunted House underwent its biggest transformation. Granville Trimper added an entire second story and incorporated ride vehicles, façade pieces, and many original Bill Tracy scenes from the closed Ghost Ship attraction. The expansion made it one of the longest operating classic dark rides in the country while preserving a unique piece of amusement park history. The ride has continued to evolve over the years while keeping its vintage charm. Additional Bill Tracy effects from another historic attraction, Phantasmagoria, were added during a 2012 renovation, helping preserve Tracy’s artwork for future generations. Today, the Haunted House remains family-owned and operated by the descendants of Granville Trimper and is recognized as one of the last authentic Bill Tracy dark rides still in operation. For me, this isn’t just another ride—it’s a tradition. Every trip to Ocean City includes a stop here, and after four decades it still brings back the same excitement I felt as a kid.
