Ramayana Ayodhya Kanda Part 25 (Ayodhya Kanda sargas 63-67): on the sixth night after Rama left for the forest, Dasharatha wakes past midnight and confesses to Kausalya an old sin - as prince regent, hunting by the Sarayu in the rainy season, he loosed a sound-aimed (shabdavedi) arrow at what he mistook for an elephant and mortally wounded Shravana, a young ascetic carrying water for his blind aged parents. The dying boy grieved not for himself but for his parents, asked the king to draw out the arrow, and pointed him to the hermitage so he could tell the father and beg his grace before anger moved the sage to curse him; to ease the king's torment he revealed he was not a Brahmana. Filling the pitcher, Dasharatha went to the blind couple and confessed; they asked to be taken to their son's body, wept over him, and offered the water rites; the boy's spirit, in a celestial form beside Indra, consoled them and ascended to heaven. The aged sage then pronounced the curse - as he was dying of grief for his son, so would Dasharatha - and the couple laid themselves on the funeral pyre and departed. That fruit now arrives like a disease that comes some time after eating food mixed with forbidden things: unable to see Rama one last time, asking Kausalya to touch him as his sight fails, Dasharatha breathes his last before Kausalya and Sumitra. The bards arriving at dawn, the palace women finding no sign of life in the king, the queens prostrate on the floor, Kausalya's reproach of Kaikeyi, the ministers preserving the king's body in an oil trough because no son is present for the cremation, Ayodhya darkened like a moonless night, citizens gathering in groups and blaming Bharata's mother, the Brahmins' assembly on the perils of a kingless land and their plea to crown a scion of Ikshvaku, and Vasishtha's swift messengers - ordered not to reveal the exile or the king's death - galloping with gifts toward Rajagriha and the Kekaya kingdom. Told in Telugu. Narrator's retelling from Valmiki Ramayana; details vary between traditions. This is the horizontal 16:9 version. Visuals are AI-generated illustrative images.
