The Rebuilt Tabernacle of David: Acts 15 and Hebrews 9 | From Death To Life - Part 31

What is the tabernacle not made with hands? Jack Scott traces it through Acts 15, Hebrews 9, and 2 Corinthians 5 to the new covenant itself. Continuing in 2 Corinthians 5, this study steps back from the text to follow one thread across the New Testament: the tabernacle. Paul writes of an earthly tent that is being taken down and a building from God, a house not made with hands. Read through modern eyes, that sounds like a promise about what happens when a believer dies. Read in Paul's own context, it is something else entirely. Jack works through three passages that speak with one voice. In Acts 15, James settles the Gentile question by quoting Amos 9 — God will return and rebuild the fallen tabernacle of David, and the stated purpose is that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord. In Hebrews, the writer compares the house of Moses to the house of Christ, the Levitical priesthood to the order of Melchizedek, and the earthly sanctuary with its two veils to a greater and more perfect tabernacle not of this creation. In 2 Corinthians 5, Paul describes that same transition — from the ministry of death written and engraved on stone to the ministry of life in Christ. The question of which David is in view in Amos 9 turns out to be the hinge. David was forbidden to build the house. Peter, in Acts 2, points to David's tomb and says the promise was never about that king. The tabernacle being rebuilt is the tabernacle of the Messiah, and its purpose is access — the veil removed, the congregation brought into the holiest, the presence of God opened to all mankind. Hebrews calls the first covenant obsolete, growing old, and ready to vanish away. This study asks what that language describes, and where it lands.
