Make a simple filled fabric heart Christmas ornament using basic hand sewing techniques. This is a project I made last Christmas, and it is one of those things that looks far more involved than it actually is. A simple fabric heart, sewn using the bagged out method, filled, closed with an invisible stitch and finished with a loop for hanging. That is all. But I am sharing it because this little Christmas decoration demonstrates something much bigger. Once you understand this basic sewing construction method, the possibilities are almost endless. The same technique can be used to make: 🧵 Stuffed toys 🧵 Christmas decorations 🧵 Keychains 🧵 Lavender sachets 🧵 Sensory pillows 🧵 Hanging decorations 🧵 Ornaments in almost any shape you can draw Choose your shape, add a seam allowance and cut two pieces of fabric. Place them right sides together, sew around the edge while leaving an opening, turn the piece right side out and fill it. Then close the opening with ladder stitch and add a loop for hanging. You can embroider or embellish the fabric before construction, experiment with different textiles, or choose different fillings depending on what you are making. Once you stop thinking of sewing projects as patterns that need to be followed and start understanding how objects are actually constructed, making your own becomes much less intimidating. And I particularly love projects like this because they stay with you. Hang it on your Christmas tree year after year, give it as a handmade gift, hang it on a door or tuck a scented version into a drawer. There is something quietly meaningful about filling your home with things your own hands have made. This project is part of A Year of Needlework, my series exploring sewing, embroidery, mending and other hand-making skills through practical, open-ended projects. I hope it gives you an idea for something of your own. Happy making. #DIYChristmasOrnament #FabricChristmasOrnament #ChristmasSewing #HandSewing #SewingForBeginners #HandmadeChristmas #ChristmasCrafts #FabricHeart #HandmadeOrnaments #DIYChristmas
