During the Italian occupation, merchants were displaced from the central commercial areas of the city, contributing to the development of what became known as “Mercato Indigeno” — the market for the indigenous population. After the end of the occupation, Mercato continued to grow into one of Ethiopia’s most important centers of commerce. Over the decades, the market became famous for its unique “Terra” trading sections, where different products and businesses developed their own areas. Coffee, spices, grains, clothing, metal products, household goods, traditional products, and countless other items have been traded throughout this enormous commercial district. Mercato also became a meeting point for people from different regions, cultures, and religious communities across Ethiopia. 🏗️ A New Era Begins Today, parts of historic Mercato are being demolished as Addis Ababa moves forward with redevelopment and modernization.
