Aurorasaurus Q&A on the 2024 Superstorms in Ireland

Dr. Alexandra Ruth Fogg is a space scientist at the Dunsink Observatory, part of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Sciences in Ireland. Aurorasaurus is an award-winning participatory science project that uses crowdsourced and participatory science data to create the first real-time, global aurora map. The project has made a number of discoveries, including that social media is effective for detecting large natural events; that crowdsourcing the verification of participatory science data works; and that space weather alerts are more accurate when integrated with participatory science data. The Aurorasaurus team in collaboration with participatory scientists and the scientific community published the first scientific study of STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement), an aurora-like phenomenon that appears closer to the equator and flows from east to west. In addition to discoveries, Aurorasaurus conducts outreach and education across the globe, often through partnerships with local groups of enthusiasts.
