Oprtalj-Portole sits on a narrow hilltop above the Mirna valley, facing Motovun across the forest, and is often called one of the most picturesque towns of northern Istria. Once a fort ringed by defensive walls, it came under Venetian rule in 1421, and the houses of the old town were built straight onto the walls, among the old town gates. In front of the gates stands the Baroque town loggia of 1765, which houses a lapidarium of Roman and medieval stone, and next to it a bastion terrace with a view all the way to the sea. The parish church of St George was built in 1526, and its 27-metre bell tower, completed in 1740, was also used for defence. Below the town, at the end of an avenue of cypresses, the small church of St Mary holds frescoes signed by Clerigin of Koper in 1471. Down in the valley lies Livade, at the heart of Istrian truffle country. All filmed by drone, at fifty locations across the municipality.
