Hidden behind the timing cover of many classic American V8s was a component that looked completely out of place. A gear with plastic teeth. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler all used variations of nylon-toothed timing sprockets. They appeared inside engines ranging from ordinary family cars to some of Detroit’s most desirable performance machines. But these were not cheap gears made entirely from plastic. The camshaft sprocket normally had a strong aluminium or metal centre surrounded by moulded nylon teeth. A timing chain connected it to the smaller steel crankshaft sprocket, keeping the pistons and valves moving in the correct sequence. Why would Detroit put nylon inside a hot, powerful V8? Because car buyers expected increasingly quiet engines. A conventional metal timing set could transmit chain noise, vibration and mechanical harshness through the engine. Nylon helped cushion the chain as it engaged the camshaft sprocket, producing the refined and nearly silent idle expected from a Cadillac, Buick, Lincoln or Chrysler. It was a deliberate engineering compromise. When these engines were new, the nylon sprockets generally performed their job extremely well. They were quiet, light and capable of surviving the mileage and warranty expectations of their era. The trouble frequently arrived much later. After decades of heat cycles, oil exposure and mechanical stress, the nylon could become brittle. As the timing chain stretched, its engagement with the sprocket also became less precise. Cracks appeared around the teeth until pieces began breaking away. Sometimes the engine provided warnings: a rattling timing chain, wandering ignition timing, reduced power, poor starting or an uneven idle. Sometimes it did not. If enough teeth stripped from the camshaft sprocket, the chain could jump. The camshaft and crankshaft would fall out of synchronization, leaving the engine unable to run—or potentially causing internal damage in engines where the pistons and valves could collide. The missing nylon did not simply disappear. Fragments commonly dropped into the oil pan, where they could accumulate around the oil-pump pickup screen. Even after replacing the failed timing set, a mechanic still needed to remove the debris before it restricted the engine’s oil supply. That is why many restorers replace surviving original nylon sprockets with steel timing sets. Performance engines frequently receive stronger roller chains and billet or hardened sprockets capable of handling aggressive camshafts, stiffer valve springs and higher engine speeds. The replacement may produce slightly more mechanical noise. But it will not quietly shed its teeth into the bottom of the engine.
